On January 8, 2020, Santa Cruz City Schools announced the appointment of new provisional Board member John Owen. Mr. Owen fills a seat in Trustee Area II, a vacancy created by the resignation of Deedee Perez-Granados, who recently moved from the area. He will complete Dr. Perez-Granados’s term, ending in 2022.

The new Trustee was selected by the Board of Education after a public interview and appointment process at a Special Board Meeting this month. Mr. Owen will be formally sworn into his position at the Santa Cruz City Schools’ Regular Board Meeting on Wednesday, January 15, 2020, at the Santa Cruz County Office of Education by Superintendent Dr. Faris Sabbah.

Mr. Owen has been involved with the District as a parent, and currently serves at the Treasurer for the Band Boosters of Santa Cruz High School. He recognizes that our community values quality education and diversity. “Community support has led to management and staff who know how to work collaboratively to provide high quality education to our students,” stated Mr. Owen. Through the Board of Education, Mr. Owen believes he will have the best opportunity to serve students, families, and the community.

Formerly a Battalion Chief for the City of Mountain View, Mr. Owen has specialized experience in emergency incident management. He has 15 years of experience in labor relations, with five years as a union negotiator, and ten years as Treasurer. Since his retirement from the Fire Department, Mr. Owen continues to serve his community as a Planning Section Chief for a Federal Interagency Incident Management Team. Furthermore, he is member of the Civil Air Patrol in Santa Cruz, auxiliary to the United States Air Force.

The Board of Education welcomes Mr. Owen as a Trustee of Santa Cruz City Schools.
