Music Program

Santa Cruz City Schools Music Program

In music class students take part in an active, musical learning experience, which includes singing, playing, memorizing, reading, writing, creating, listening to, and appreciating music.  Lessons in music include learning concepts and skills in steady beat, dynamics, tempo, melodic contour, song form, music styles, composers and instrumental families.   Through these activities, students acquire musical knowledge and skills that can help them enjoy and make music now and in the future.

Music instruction is educationally beneficial for children. Studies have shown that students who study music score consistently higher on math and verbal standardized tests. Also, participation in music makes for a more enjoyable school and social life.  Music performances at each school and grade level vary throughout the year.  Please check your child’s school music website for further information.

Bay View, Delaveaga, Gault and Westlake Elementary Schools:

Kindergarten through second grade students enjoy singing and movement with a primary music teacher or their classroom teacher.  Third graders attend music class every other week while fourth and fifth graders attend music class weekly with a music specialist. Delaveaga and Gault are taught by Greg Brown while Bay View and Westlake is taught by Katrina Haeger.

Fourth and fifth graders can choose to join the after school band.  students can play flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone or percussion. The band performs several times during the year and is an integral part of the school.
