Volunteer Requirements

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Santa Cruz City Schools.  We appreciate your willingness to support our students, schools, and community.  To ensure the safety and well-being of our students and staff, volunteers must complete the requirements outlined below before beginning volunteer service.

1. Fingerprinting and Background Check

California law requires volunteers who have contact with students to undergo a criminal background check, including fingerprinting. This requirement applies to all volunteers, including, but not limited to:

  • Athletic coaches

  • Chaperones and field trip drivers

  • Consultants and contractors

  • Interns

  • Student teachers

  • Other individuals providing volunteer services to the District

Exception: Parents or guardians who volunteer only in their own student's classroom, under the direct supervision of the classroom teacher, are not required to complete a background check.

2. Tuberculosis (TB) Clearance

California law requires volunteers to provide documentation demonstrating that they are free from tuberculosis (TB).  Volunteers must submit documentation of a negative TB test or TB Risk Assessment before beginning volunteer service.

3. Mandated Reporter Training

California law requires volunteers to complete state-approved Mandated Reporter Training annually.  Volunteers must complete the required training before beginning volunteer service and renew the training each year.  Please log in at https://sccs-keenan.safeschools.com/register/dd458b33, create your account and complete the training.

Volunteers are responsible for maintaining current TB documentation and completing the required annual Mandated Reporter Training throughout their volunteer service.

  1. Complete a Volunteer Agreement and obtain the School or Department Administrator’s or Athletic Director’s signature.

  2. Gather your government issued photo ID and a hard copy of your negative TB test results.
