Educator
Workforce Housing

With the Santa Cruz area recently named the most expensive place to live in the nation, and school budgets fixed at the state level, our community has a problem: how do we keep the amazing teachers and staff we attract?

We are so grateful that our community offered so much support for Bond Measures K&L, passed in 2022, which are funding a solution for our educators: a 100-unit, housing development with below-market rent.

UPDATE: On February 6th, the Santa Cruz City Planning Commission voted unanimously to approve the educator housing project! At the meeting, Comissioner Thompson said:

“This is one of the best multi-family projects I’ve seen, on many levels. It provides a buffer from the neighborhood, it actually has enough parking. Plus, they’re good looking buildings and can accommodate many household sizes.

My hat's off to them: Good architecture, good site planning. Much better than many I’ve seen!"

NEXT: The City Council will vote on approval of the project on March 11th!

Where:

313 Swift Street on the West Side of Santa Cruz, bordered by Gateway School, Sgt. Derby Park and Cafe Iveta.

When:

We plan to break ground in early 2025 and open in 2028. We have hired development partners, we have approved the schematic design,

Who:

It will be open to teachers and support staff as well, with a lottery system likely in the event that there are more applicants than openings
